Ecologists assessing a grassland site

Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

A broad ecological survey identifying habitats, protected-species potential and likely next steps for planning.

England and WalesReport typically guaranteed within 7 days of survey — or it's free

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, or PEA, was previously known as a Phase 1 Habitat Survey. It is frequently requested by a Local Planning Authority to identify habitats, ecological constraints and the potential presence of protected species.

The appraisal establishes whether mitigation or further species-specific surveys may be required. Species considered can include bats, birds, great crested newts, badgers, hazel dormice, otters, water voles and reptiles.

We typically guarantee your completed PEA report within 7 days of the survey date—or it’s free.
